Our Projects Page is designed to provide a more in-depth look at a selection of some of the pieces we've created to date. These start to finish histories shed some light on our creative process, showcase our skills and hopefully demonstrate how the natural beauty of wood could be integrated into your own environment.

 the walnut dining table

This Walnut Dining Table was our first big table build to be commissioned after moving into our workshop. The clients' Walnut tree had come down in the wind and they wanted to put the timber to good use. The bottom third of the tree was completely hollow which had caused it to break, coming down across the back garden where it couldn't be accessed by big machinery. Our first step was to process the timber for milling.

We used an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill which is an ideal solution for processing timber in areas that can't be accessed by large machinery and a great way to save trees from ending up as firewood. Milling the timber into planks instead turns it into a more valuable commodity, especially if it's a desirable species.  And if you're sad about losing a tree from your garden whether it be dead, diseased, windblown or whatever, getting it milled and made into something beautiful is a great way to give your tree a whole new life.

After milling the timber had to be appropriately stored and seasoned until the moisture content was suitable for furniture making. This can take some time but the process can be sped up with a wood-drying kiln and the end result will be a supply of premium timber that will definitely be worth the wait!

Our client wanted to use their beautiful English Walnut to make a dining table; the brief was to create a rustic style table to seat 10. We began by biscuit-jointing planks together to form the tabletop before building the frame and legs. To achieve the rustic look our clients wanted we split a log in half, retaining the natural shape of the timber to create a pair of chunky pedestal legs. Carved feet were then dovetail-jointed to the legs to enhance the design and add stability. The whole table was finished with two coats of a good quality wood lacquer.
